School a la Larsen

School is in session, folks.
Here at the School a la Larsen, we are learning how to...

operate on Tasha,

Make a tasty soup,

clean up after yourself,

brush teeth,

and play nice.
(hmmm...it looks like we haven't mastered the "clean up after yourself" discipline)

Oh, and a dress code is enforced.

Ahh, I like a good cheesy post once in a while. Don't you?
Mary made that onsie for Evan. He looked handsome in it for the hour of stake conference we made it through.
Stake conference plus kids equals a big funny joke.

Vultures

I spend most of my day saving Evan from vultures trying to peck at his remains.

Handmade Stuff

At the reunion in Heber, us gals had a fabric swap. Nettie sent us all this piece, and we had to bring a fat quarter that matched for everyone.

Here is what I came home with.
Nettie also gave me some FairyTale fabric squares that I begged for when I saw this quilt she made.

So then while I was laying there in bed, too excited to sleep, I was dreaming up what I could do with all my treasures.

I decided to make a book out of the FairyTale fabric.
I would work on it while trying to get Evan to fall asleep at night (between the "let cry" and "comfort" sessions. He really just wants me to hold him for the rest of his life. I'm trying to get a balance between rocking my baby for a while, and letting him figure out how to fall asleep on his own. It's tricky.)

I digress...
Here is a sampling of what the inside looks like.

This fox page is my favorite. I like how the colors work together.

I used every last piece of fabric from the swap.
Even the original piece Nettie sent.

I told Avery to look like she loved it and was "reading" it.
She just ignored me and kept watching tv.
awesome.

In my head, I imagine her making up stories that go along with the pictures.
I should start by turning the tv off.

I also begged for a bib, so Nettie brought me one.

And then I copied the pattern and made a bunch more.
Is that ok? Is there something ethically wrong with that?
Because if there is, I will just go and throw all my handmade bibs in the garbage.
No, just kidding. I won't.

Roller

Evan is officially rolling over on his own.
Plus he's officially the cutest thing I've ever seen.
Plus he's officially addicted to sleeping in bed with me.
So now you will find me in the middle of the night standing by his crib trying to convince him that it's better in there than by my side.
Vacation and sickness really cramped his style.

Oh yeah, and I think once I said I love his high pitched squeals? Well that's a lie. I don't. It is out of control.
Ask anyone who has heard him. It's so loud and so unnerving.

Jimi Hates These Shoes

Plus they hurt my feet. But Avery likes to shuffle around in them.

There is something sentimental about a daughter clomping around in her mother's shoes. It probably comes from some sappy commercial, but for some reason I get an odd feeling of fulfillment when she does it.
Here's something I love:
when Jimi prepares Avery's chocolate milk for her, he bows at the waist and in his best butler accent says,

"your tap tap is serrrrrved, madam."

The Mystery of the Missing Toilet Paper Roll

The following story is true. It is a tale of how, upon the suggestion of Andy, 5 little girls patiently waited until the adults retired to bed to wreak anarchy upon the household. And how their seemingly victimless prank caused another uncle horror and anguish. Brandon has been invited as a guest to tell his story...

"I remember it as if it were yesterday… I was attending my wife’s family reunion at a nice cabin in Heber City, UT. This wasn’t exactly what you would call roughing it – the place was huge and had ALL the amenities you could ask for. However, one of the major challenges was simply the fact that there were 27 people in this place… and only 3 bathrooms.

My day started out A-ok. I fished, played some pool, ate some grub, yada-yada-yada. I had been at the cabin for 2 days now, and was really starting to feel the need to...let’s just say I had been eating well, and what goes in must come out.

About 8 pm, I made my way into the bathroom to scout out the facilities:

Sturdy toilet, able to support a hefty carriage - check.

Ample lighting for reading any and all reading material - check.

Toilet paper – (oooh, glad I checked. Nothing hanging on the wall).

No problem. I see a roll sitting on the counter, which I abruptly hung on the wall, mindful to be sure and have the end hang over the top, in its correct manner. Just then, I realize there is a commotion at the other end of the house. I leave the bathroom to examine said commotion, and spend the next 3 to 4 minutes trying to get my girls in bed. My kids always resist going to bed, and think up any and every excuse to prolong the ordeal. They will need drinks, dolls, and other sundry items they have collected throughout the day. I oblige these requests patiently, because I know I’m just a few minutes away from some long overdue relaxation in the bathroom.

OK, the girls are now in bed, and it’s finally ‘Brandon Time’. Ahhhh… I sit down and begin nature’s business. Everything is pretty much standard procedure. I read, I relax – and now for the final act… I reach for the toilet paper…

To my absolute astonishment (and horror), the precious item that had just moments before hung on the wall was gone. Vanished. “What?!?!? How could this be???!?? Just a few minutes ago… I… hung…. Right there…???”

Panic. Heart racing, adrenaline kicking in. I do a double-take and then scan the bathroom. The toilet paper is definitely AWOL. Out of sheer desperation, I display acrobatic moves that would impress any Eastern European gymnast and look through each drawer in the counter. Nothing.

I yelled out in frustration, “Dang it!!!”. No response. Then, for reasons I still don’t completely understand, I started to yell out to Andy for help. After two or three cries to him, I realize there is no way Andy is coming in here to throw me a lifeline. I’m left with just one option: I gotta get busy livin’, or get busy drying. It’s that simple.

I’ve since labeled the next 90 seconds as my ‘Trail of Smears’. I wandered 50 yards through a crowded house, petrified that someone would notice my condition. At one point, I thought I made eye contact with Marty, who was sitting directly in my line-of-view.

My excursion seemed to take hours. All the while, I could hear unseen voices in my head pointing at me and yelling, “Unclean! Unclean!”. Ohhh, the humanity.

Eventually, I found the good stuff. Four rolls of unused paper, sitting in another bathroom. It was like manna from the heavens. Never has a paper product looked so absolutely divine.

I’ll spare you some details here, but suffice it to say that once I returned to my normal self, I embarked on finding the culprit behind the ‘Paper Caper’. I was angry, and I demanded to know who had done this to me.

Nobody fessed up to the crime. All my supposed ‘loved ones’ did was laugh and mock me. I spent the rest of the evening eyeballing each one of them – waiting for some sign that they were behind the thievery. I watched them like a poker player, waiting for any sign that they had a guilty conscious. Sadly, I got nothing. I retired for the evening, confident that some mother had taken the roll of toilet paper to keep by their bedside to wipe a child’s nose in the night. “I hope this person is happy that their small convenience nearly caused me a diaper rash of epic proportions”, I thought over and over.

In the morning, the household awoke to quite the sight: streams of toilet paper, spread out about the house. It was mockery like I’d never experienced. It didn’t take anyone too long to uncover the real scenario. A bunch of little girls (inspired by one evil uncle – ironically enough, Andy the resident policeman), had snuck about just before bedtime stealing toilet paper. They faked asleep until the house got quiet, then they arose and did some teenage ‘ToiletPapering’. I didn’t know whether to be proud (I mean, it was quite impressive for a 6- and 8-year-old) or let them experience my wrath.

The craziest part of the story is that prior to our finding out that little girls had pranked us, the family assumed I got up in the night and took out my revenge by scattering TP around like some sort of deranged psychopath. (Speaking of deranged psychopaths, Andy was disappointed that they only managed to disperse 2 and ½ rolls of paper about the house).

In the end, I laughed it off. However, if you would have looked in any of my pockets at any time during the remainder of the reunion, you would have seen about 25 Kleenexes. You know, just in case…"

Thanks for your honesty, Brandon.

Upon retrospection, the girls were acting awfully suspicious the night before: lingering in bathrooms, hoarding items in their pinata goodie bags, and strait-as-an-arrow Morgan suddenly wanting to sleep in her parents' room. She didn't want to be found guilty by association.

And actually, for all us moms with sick, runny-nosed babies, this prank ended up being quite convenient. Tools to wipe noses were within an arm's reach all morning.

First Haircut

My sisters convinced me to cut Avery's hair while at the cabin.
I knew she needed a cut, but I couldn't imagine how she would sit still for a stranger with scissors.
I hadn't thought about doing it myself.

I just put some snacks in front of her, and snip snip snip.

All the girls were gathered around the bar watching, "this is her first haircut?"
Kailyn told me that her mom kept some hair from her first haircut and put it in her baby book. So that's what I did.

I love it!
I realize how over due a cut was. She looks so old now.

Calvin's Birthday Party

The birthday boy.
This kid cracks me up. He asked for a suitcase for his birthday.
So he got one and was so excited.
"A suitcase! Move, Wyatt!" (as he rolls it across the room)

The day before his birthday I told him I was excited for his party.
He told me, "you can't come to it."
"why not?"
"it will be too muddy"

For his cake, he said he wanted "the brown kind", so this is as brown as they get.

This picture is for you Nettie. It cracks me up.

Calvin's birthday party came with a pinata. So fun.
And if you notice all the little kids have goody bags...made by Nettie.

Right after Calvin took a few whacks, he ran back inside to play with his suitcase.

That Wyatt kid is also hilarious.

Calvin was getting his diaper changed and Wyatt came up to him and said (something to this effect),
"hey I have a little one like that too"
"pee comes out of it"
and Calvin said,
"yeah, but yours is a Wyatt one."

They make up for the fact that they are just 2 boys among many girls with other such antics.
Like when they both pooped their pants within an hour of each other.
Wyatt came running in the cabin holding his bum saying,
"I already did it"

Then 45 minutes later, Emily was outside on the porch and started yelling,
"Nettie!! Jeff!!"
Calvin had taken off his pants and diaper to reveal that he too "already did it".

So there you go. Poop and wiener stories.

Now back to the pinata.
Morgan eventually was the one who busted it open.

Emily is saving Avery from getting whacked by the bat.
That makes up for the Raley's incident I'd say.

Sammy eating her spoils.
Avery has been playing with the bouncy ball she got from the pinata all day.

Extreme Compounding

Compounding.
That is a term invented (by Brandon) to describe my family when we get together and just hunker at my parents' house/compound.
It usually entails sitting around looking at babies, preparing meals in the kitchen, playing with grandpa's gadget games, walking around the yard, fields, cows, or barnyard.

But this year we decided to go extreme. My parents rented a cabin up in Heber City so that we could compound in the mountains. It was awesome!

(t-shirt designed and created by Mary)

At any given time, there were close to a thousand people in one area.
5 babies under(ish) the age of 1.
Crazy.

This room is where kid debauchery was unleashed.
Think "Lord of the Flies"(as described by Brandon).
One time Nettie came into this room to find an electronic hanging by a wire?
So the parents had to enforce some rules to stifle the anarchy somewhat.

All the little girls slept in this room every night.
And in the middle of the night, anarchy reined. More on that later.

Some of my family have commented that they wish they got more pictures of the "mundane" happenings.
Here's a good one.

We got a babysitter for all the little kids and went to dinner. We put on Backyardigans to make it easier for the babysitter (Kim's awesome sister) to keep the kids in one place.

We played lots of pool.
Emily was all, "Now, how do you play this game? I know you do a lot of this" (she walks over to the chalk and grinds it into her stick).
But then she beat me every game.

The stairs.

Why does Avery love these stairs so much?
I would say 80% of her time was spent going up and down these stairs.

Actually, all 5 of the babies spent most of their time teetering at the top of staircases.

That Ginger is 9 months old.
And she walks.
Her mom's homemade milk is fortified with something strong.
Evan and his sit ups.
He always lifts his head like this so he can better see what is going on around him.
Maybe Ginger should teach him how to walk.

I took this picture from the deck above.
The little girls spent a lot of time gathering the little plastic beads (pellets?) from Andy's pellet? gun.
We would shoot at targets down below and they would gather the ammo for us. It was a symbiotic relationship.
Sometimes they would swarm dangerously close to the targets. But I am assured that all little boys shoot each other with these guns.

So Jimi said he wanted to see how it felt to get shot.
He handed me the gun and instructed me to shoot him.
"Aim for the calfs". So I did, and I couldn't hit him.
"Fine, aim for my back" So I did, and shot him in the head.
It smarted, but at least it didn't pierce the skin. Sheesh. Don't ever have me inflict a "non mortal" wound on you, I might shoot you in the head.

Avery doesn't have any cousins right at her age/development level, so most of the time she is on her own. (or a "loner" as described by Aaron).

I think Mylie is her favorite cousin.
